VW's Scout has more than 50,000 reservations for upcoming EVs as automaker aims to grow U.S. share

LAS VEGAS — Scout Motors has received more than 50,000 refundable reservation deposits for its first electric pickups and SUVs, according to Volkswagen CEO Oliver Blume. Volkswagen revived Scout, which was an American brand from 1961 to 1980, and revealed production-intent vehicles of its Terra pickup truck and Traveler SUV in October. The vehicles will be offered as all-electric models or extended-range electric vehicles, or EREVs.

The electric vehicle charging hardware, Wayne PWR, offers up to 400 kilowatts per connector and features a point-of-sale-agnostic payment system. While the pressure for c-stores to add EV charging has eased over the past few years, U.S. drivers bought a record number of EVs in Q3 2024 and many companies are still looking to add charging infrastructure.

Gaza death toll may be 41% higher than official figures, study finds

The number of people killed in Gaza during Israel's deadly offensive in the Palestinian enclave is significantly higher than the figures reported by local health authorities, researchers at a leading health university in Britain have found. In a peer-reviewed study published Thursday in The Lancet journal, researchers at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine said they estimated that as many as 64,260 people were killed in "traumatic injury deaths" in Gaza between Oct. 7, 2023 and June 30, 2024.

Israel confirmed that a hostage found killed in Gaza was Hamza Ziyadne, the son of another hostage, Youssef Ziyadne, found dead alongside him in an underground tunnel near the southern city of Rafah. The family of Hamza, an Israeli Bedouin taken hostage by Hamas-led fighters alongside his father, had been notified of his death following the conclusion of forensic tests, the Israeli military said on Friday.

Now, new research suggests that Pluto and Charon briefly came together billions of years ago in a newly discovered “kiss and capture” collision. Scientists have long theorized that Charon formed much like Earth’s moon, which was created after a Mars-size object slammed into our planet. The impact sent molten debris from Earth flying into space, which eventually came together in orbit around our world and cooled to form the moon.

Cruise ship passengers from across US sue after worker sentenced for placing hidden cameras in guest rooms

Nineteen passengers, including four minors, who cruised on board Royal Caribbean's Symphony of the Sea are suing the cruise line and a former company employee, who placed hidden cameras in their guest rooms. Arvin Joseph Mirasol, a citizen of the Philippines and former Royal Caribbean crew member named in the lawsuit filed on Tuesday, was sentenced in August in Florida to 30 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to producing child pornography. The passengers, who were not named in the lawsuit and rather referred to by abbreviations, are mostly American citizens from all across the country, including New York, Georgia, Missouri, Arkansas and Texas, while several passengers are from Canada.
