In just three weeks the largest celebration of filmmaking achievements will be held, the Oscars. Since the award ceremony's establishment in 1929, one filmmaker has stood above the rest, taking home the the most golden statuettes. The late Walt Disney holds the record for the most Oscar wins at 22, with four additional honorary awards.
When Demi Moore won best actress at the Critics Choice Awards for "The Substance," she thanked voters for recognizing a horror film, saying that movies in the genre are normally "overlooked and not seen for the profundity that they can hold." She's absolutely right. During a conversation with entertainment journalists at an event in January, I predicted Moore would win the best actress Oscar, to which one fellow reporter incredulously replied, "Have you seen 'The Substance'?" It was a fair reaction given that gnarly body-horror movies aren't generally the Academy's cup of tea.
LONDON — Papal selection thriller "Conclave" and period drama "The Brutalist" were the big winners at the BAFTA Film Awards on Sunday, winning four prizes each. "Conclave," which had led nominations with 12 nods, won the night's most coveted award, best film, as well as outstanding British film, best adapted screenplay and best editing.
It's the saga that made major headlines in 2021. "American Murder: Gabby Petito," a three-episode docuseries now available on Netflix, gives insight into the disappearance of the 22-year-old influencer who died after going on a road trip with her fiancé, Brian Laundrie. "The series captures the reality of a young woman enmeshed in an abusive relationship behind closed doors — even as she put on a happy, 'Insta-perfect' face for social media," Netflix said in a press release.
Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds are taking a break from their legal battle with "It Ends with Us" star Justin Baldoni for a few good laughs. The A-list couple, who are in ongoing litigation with Lively's former co-star and director, appeared at the Sunday premiere of "SNL50: The Anniversary Special." The star-studded NBC broadcast celebrated the 50th anniversary of the iconic sketch comedy series with a three-hour special.
Fifty years of "Saturday Night Live" is a lot of history, legacy and pressure to pack into a one-night special, even if it's 3½ hours long. But producer Lorne Michaels and the "SNL" cast and writers, past and present, tried to do just that in the show's 50th anniversary special Sunday on NBC, a star-studded black-tie bacchanalia of celebrity cameos, sketch revivals and self-congratulatory montages that gave it the flavor of an awards show crossed with an extended episode of "SNL" crossed with a drunken party that should have been attended only by people who have actually worked on the show. The special even featured an "In Memoriam" segment, although it was reserved for all the offensive and poorly aged sketches over the years (and to remind us they re-aired a lot of the racist and sexist stuff).
Another winter storm will hit the United States this week and will bring snow to Kentucky, after the state was hit with devastating flooding over the weekend that killed 12 and prompted over 1,000 rescues. College student Jaren Barajas has a new claim to fame after beating Milwaukee Bucks star Damian Lillard in a shooting contest, winning $100,000 in the process. Barajas and Lillard were competing in the MrBeast $100,000 Challenge during the NBA All-Star Game on Sunday when the 18-year-old shot what he later called a “life-changing” bucket. In the matchup, Barajas had to drain one three-pointer from the logo at half-court before Lillard could make three. The veteran point guard had made two successful attempts when Barajas drained a buzzer-beater with his final effort, sparking a frenzied reaction from fans inside Chase Center.
Golden State Warriors superstar Stephen Curry delivered a vintage performance in front of his home crowd, leading Shaq’s OGs to victory in the first NBA All-Star mini tournament on Sunday night and earning MVP honors. It was fitting end to the All-Star weekend in San Francisco as the Warriors greatest star put on a show. Curry ignited Team Shaq, a veteran-heavy squad, featuring Kevin Durant and Jayson Tatum, to a commanding 42-25 win over Chuck’s Global Stars, which was headlined by international standouts Nikola Jokic and Victor Wembanyama.
