The continuing surge in cap space has coincided with the accelerated growth at the top of the market for several premium positions, including quarterback, wide receiver and edge rusher. With the arrival of the NFL offseason, several more stars in key spots could be in line to cash in with sizable new agreements.

Wembanyama getting no shortage of well-wishes from other NBA players, coaches

Feb. 21, 2025

“It’s a little bit of shock,” said Malone, the coach of the Denver Nuggets. “As a fan of the game, you never want to see anybody, any player — but especially a great player, the future of this league — be shut down for the remaining season. So, you hate to see that happen to anybody. And hopefully Wemby is going to be OK.” That is the Spurs’ belief, that Wembanyama will make a full recovery even though he is not expected to play again this season. He was the favorite to win defensive player of the year, seemed destined for an All-NBA nod and probably would have even been on a few MVP ballots when the votes are cast in April.

Victor Wembanyama’s season is over. What’s next for the Spurs star?

Feb. 21, 2025

Victor Wembanyama is one of the faces of the NBA, the star of the San Antonio Spurs and already one of the biggest names in basketball. And his season is over, after the Spurs announced Thursday that he has been diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder. The 7-foot-3 center from France was averaging 24.3 points, 11 rebounds, 3.8 blocks and 3.7 assists this season. Since blocked shots became an official statistic, only Kareem Abdul-Jabbar — nearly a half-century ago — finished a season with those numbers or better.

Zack Martin is retiring after a decorated career at guard for the Cowboys, AP sources say

Zack Martin is retiring after a decorated career that included seven All-Pro seasons at right guard with the Dallas Cowboys, two people with knowledge of the decision said Thursday. Martin informed Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones of his decision in a meeting Thursday, one of the people told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because no announcement was planned. The 34-year-old Martin didn’t make it through his 11th and final season with the Cowboys because of an ankle injury that eventually required surgery. He said when he was shut down after 10 games that he wasn’t ready to make a decision on returning.

Feb. 21, 2025

The American was on a 13-match winning streak heading into Tuesday’s contest at Melbourne Park and seemed to have a strong chance of claiming her second grand slam title. But despite a late break of serve offering a glimmer of hope, Gauff was undone by an inspired Badosa on Rod Laver Arena, with the Spaniard reaching the final four of a grand slam for the first time in her career. “It’s tough right after and I’m still disappointed, but I think the way I played, even though it wasn’t my best, I gave it my all on the court so that’s something to be proud of,” Gauff told reporters.
