Joel Embiid was out again for the 76ers, his injured left knee again an issue that has stuck the All-Star center’s immediate playing future in limbo. The 7-foot Embiid underwent testing Monday — with more scheduled for the next day — and was ruled out of Philadelphia’s game against Chicago. The oft-injured Embiid missed his 38th game of the season for the sagging Sixers, and all options — from rest to potential surgery to playing through pain — remain on the table, depending on the results of the testing and imaging.
In an 80-78 overtime victory against Butler on Jan. 21, UConn men’s basketball coach Dan Hurley attracted national attention not for something his team did, but something he said. At a stoppage in the game, television cameras cut to the Huskies coach berating a referee over what he believed to be a missed call. “Don't turn your back on me,” Hurley said to the official, who had started to walk away while Hurley was speaking to him. “I'm the best coach in the f---ing sport.
The next time you’re driving your son or daughter to their game, and you see them engrossed in their phone, Larissa Mills wants you to remember something. “The brain takes 22 minutes to go back to refocusing,” she tells USA TODAY Sports. “We've wasted an inning, a period, a half on poor decision-making skills. So why did you bother? Don't even go on the ice, as far as I'm concerned.”
The Chicago Sky acquired two-time All-Star guard Ariel Atkins from the Washington Mystics, who received Chicago's No. 3 pick in the 2025 WNBA draft, per an ESPN report on Sunday. The rebuilding Mystics, who moved on from general manager Mike Thibault and coach Eric Thibault in October after missing the playoffs, will also receive a 2027 first-round pick swap along with the Sky's second-round selection that year.
Former MLB All-Star Alex Rodriguez can still play some ball, even if it's not on the diamond. The three-time American League MVP, who now works as an MLB analyst for Fox, knows his way around the basketball court as well – as he showed Sunday afternoon. At halftime of Bucknell's college basketball game against Army, Rodriguez came out of the stands to attempt a half-court shot as part of a halftime promotion. Hitting the shot would win $10,000 for a very lucky student.
The U.S. women's national team, despite fielding multiple teenagers and an inexperienced lineup, held off Australia for a 2-1 win at the 2025 SheBelieves Cup on Sunday. A first-minute goal from Lynn Biyendolo set the USWNT on its way, while Michelle Cooper's first senior national team goal proved to be the winner. Despite a late finish from Matildas' veteran Michelle Heyman, the USWNT benefitted from impressive performances by playmaker Jaedyn Shaw and 19-year-old holding midfielder Claire Hutton.
Notre Dame women's basketball entered the day looking to lock up its second ACC regular season crown under Niele Ivey, and solidify its case for the top overall seed for March Madness. The former, however, will have to wait at least another game. In what was a back-and-forth contest between two of the league's top teams, No. 12 NC State knocked off No. 1 Notre Dame in double overtime at Reynolds Coliseum on Sunday behind Zoe Brooks' game-high 33 points on 9 of 20 shooting from the field.
The Golden State Warriors honored Andre Iguodala on Sunday at the Chase Center following the 126-102 victory over the Dallas Mavericks. The team raised a banner into the rafters that read "Andre Iguodala" with a predominant No. 9 representing his jersey number. The Warriors were holding the ceremony on the same day as the game against the Mavericks, which allowed Iguodala's former teammate Klay Thompson to attend the ceremony. Thompson went to Dallas as a free agent in the summer of 2024, after spending 13 years with the Warriors.
The countdown is on with Alex Ovechkin just 13 goals from overtaking Wayne Gretzky as the NHL's career goal leader – a mark that once seemed unsurmountable and earned Gretzky the nickname The Great One. The Great Eight, as the Washington Capital is sometimes called, began the season 41 goals behind Gretzky's 894. But, perhaps, numbers fall short of conveying how dominant the two players' careers have been.
