Brief Warm-Up Before Winter Strikes Back

Record cold temperatures have been felt from the Canadian border to cities in the South like Houston, Texas, Atlanta, Georgia and even in the panhandle of Florida. However we do expect a brief warmup, but don’t get too excited or start planting in the south, as another cold shot arrives later this month. We are not done with our winter coats just yet.

Warmer weather on the way as severe freeze loosens dangerous grip

Rejoice! Warmer weather is on the way. A major snowstorm and dangerous freeze that left parts of the U.S. covered in ice and snow is finally beginning to loosen its grip. Friday will be the last morning for widespread record-low temperatures, and the last afternoon with high temperatures 15 to 30 degrees below average. Friday night is forecast to be bitterly cold for much of the central and eastern U.S., the National Weather Service's Weather Prediction Center said in a post on X. More than 70 million people from the central Plains to Central Florida remain under cold alerts.

t’s really, really cold again — as the US shivers through at least the eighth blast of air from the Arctic this winter. Winter, which is warming faster than any other season for much of the US, seems to be making a comeback for the first time in years; this January was the coldest in the Lower 48 since 1988. But the US is an outlier, and so is this winter. January was the warmest on record for the globe and, in a vast expanse of global warmth, the US sticks out like a cold, sore thumb.

The Trump administration told US government scientists working on a vital global climate report to stop their work, according to a scientist involved in the report – the latest move to withdraw the US from global climate action and research. The US had been highly involved in planning for the next installment of the report due out in 2029 from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the world’s leading scientific authority on climate change. The IPCC assesses how the climate crisis is affecting the planet according to the latest science. Its reports take thousands of scientists many years to produce and are used to inform policymakers across the world of the risks posed by global warming.

When Could You See Warmer Temperatures?

Dangerously cold wind chills will persist through the end of the week across the Plains with places like Bismarck, Chicago and Kansas City still seeing feels-like temps far below zero. Trump's layoffs hit firefighter safety programs

Until Saturday, Patrick Montague investigated firefighter deaths for the federal government. Montague, 46, a Kentucky native, has a rare combination of skills and expertise — academic training, technical know-how and 26 years fighting fires — that made him a good fit for the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health's small Fire Fighter Fatality Investigation and Prevention Program. In nearly two years on the job, he said, supervisors had commended him repeatedly for his work.

Jon Burnett, longtime weatherman for CBS Pittsburgh, dies at 71

TV journalist Jon Burnett, a longtime weather forecaster for CBS Pittsburgh, has died. He was 71. The Pittsburgh station, also known as KDKA-TV, confirmed Burnett's death in an obituary published Thursday. The date of Burnett's death was not disclosed. "KDKA-TV is sad to report that Jon died of complications from suspected CTE at age 71, according to Dr. Joseph Malone, a UPMC Cognitive Neurologist," the obituary read. "He leaves behind an incredible legacy."

Another winter storm has dropped more snow over several states in the central and southeastern portion of the country Wednesday, with more in the forecast for Thursday. The National Weather Service said in its Thursday morning forecast the storm is continuing to track northeastward away from the Mid-Atlantic coast, with accumulating snowfall expected to come to an end across Virginia and North Carolina's eastern shores but not before dumping several inches of snow on Virginia, North Carolina, West Virginia, Kentucky and Tennessee.
